Case Study - Shooting Sports in Marin County California

It has gotten more and more difficult for shooters to get any practice in the area. While some of the difficulties may be partially made up for by dry firing practice at home, it is a shame.

There had been two indoor ranges in the area, one in bordering Sonoma County and another in Marin County. First the one in Sonoma County closed, even though it was frequented by local police departments for training purposes. This business was pressured to close by local city "leaders" with an anti-gun agenda. California passed more legislation on ammunition and gun ownership in general. The Marin County San Rafael indoor range had a lease expiring and did not want to take the risk that they might become unprofitable due to new restrictions and who knows how many other future regulations that might come along in the future. They moved to Nevada.

Shooters here mostly travel to Contra Costa County over a toll bridge to an outdoor range (which is a very fine place) but has no evening hours. IPSC shooting was very popular there some years ago, but when California passed magazine restrictions were enacted the sport was hurt and had to change.

We had gun shows in Marin at the Civic Center. County supervisors demanded they not be allowed anymore and they are gone. There were good deals on equipment and ammunition. Shooters should boycott other events there in response. Recently, California shooters need to pay an extrra dollar for ammunition purchases and be background checked. Many are denied unless they have bought a gun in California within the last five years. It is just another blow to our sport.

The agenda against guns includes biasing the public against them. In Marin, if someone tells a neighbor they are going to a target range, most likely the neighbor will get a shocked look on their face and say something like "Oh, be careful with guns" (as if the person is not already responsible). Bring your neighbors into the sport if possible.
